Forgetting their commitment of not holding political activities that adversely affect the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 campaign, ethnic fronts of the major political parties enforced a general strike in Kathmandu Valley on 27 April.
Senior leaders of all political parties during the soft launch of the campaign in November last year had signed a paper promising not to hold any strike and help the government make the campaign a grand success.
The strike vehicular movement, educational institutions and business enterprises from the early morning. The banda enforcers, however, allowed tourist vehicles to ply. However, many tourists could be seen walking to their destinations because public vehicles had stayed off the roads because of the strike.
The parties, however, defended themselves, saying they have neither taken any decision to hold a general strike.
