A day hike to the Shivapuri National Park is one of the most beautiful hikes in Kathmandu Valley. Shivapuri National Park is situated at an altitude of 2563m north of Kathmandu and is second highest hill around Kathmandu valley. In fact, Shivapuri locates the source of the holy river Bagmati that flows through Kathmandu. After breakfast at the hotel, we drive for about 20 minutes to the Budhanilkantha Temple, 8 kms north of Kathmandu. Here you can see a Shiva statue floating on the water on snakes, a holy place for believers.
From Budhanilkantha we walk through the Shivapuri conservation area. This is the government protected forest where over 500 animal species are found. We start our hike from the southern boundary of the area where the army check post is located. After enjoying the view on the top and some rest, we start descending again. Moreover, we will visit Nagi Gompa. This Buddhist nunnery is located at an altitude of 2330m. However, foreigners often come there for meditation. It is a steep downhill hike, but totally worth it. From Budhanilkantha drive back to Kathmandu.
