The Shivapuri National Park Day Hike is one of the most scenic and rewarding hikes in the Kathmandu Valley. Located at an altitude of 2563m, Shivapuri is the second-highest hill around Kathmandu and a peaceful natural escape from the bustling city. This protected area is not only rich in biodiversity, with over 500 species of flora and fauna, but it is also culturally significant as the source of the holy Bagmati River, which flows through the heart of Kathmandu.
The journey begins with a 20-minute drive (8 km) from Kathmandu to the sacred Budhanilkantha Temple, home to a remarkable stone statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on a bed of serpents in a pond. From here, the hike enters the Shivapuri Conservation Area through the southern army check post and gradually ascends through lush forests. Along the trail, hikers can enjoy tranquil surroundings, birdwatching, and glimpses of wildlife.
At the summit of Shivapuri Hill (2563m), you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and even distant peaks of the Annapurna range on clear days. On the descent, a visit to Nagi Gompa (2330m), a serene Buddhist nunnery popular for meditation retreats, adds a cultural and spiritual touch to the hike. The journey ends with a return drive to Kathmandu.

07:15: Departure from office to Budhanilkantha
08:00: Tea break, fill up water bottle or last minute shopping for the hike
08:30: Entrance of Shivapuri National park – let’s start the hike!
12:00: Reach top of Shivapuri, enjoy stunning views

Lunch break for one hour:

NOTE: There is no food or water available in the park, so make sure to bring your own
13:00: Hike back to the base of the park via Nagi Gompa
16:00: Meet your vehicle outside the entrance and drive back to Kathmandu
