Balthali Village trekking is one of the most beautiful village hiking routes in Kathmandu valley. Want to get out of the busy city for a while? Balthali is one of the old villages which has been a center of culture, trade and learning in Nepal. In fact, the small settlement of Balthali village is standing on a plateau around 40km away from Kathmandu. Moreover, the village is situated at the junction of two rivers. Therefore, Balthali village is an outstanding place of isolation and relaxation. Enjoy the special atmosphere created by the surrounding Nepali countryside with lush rice fields and traditional farm houses. Have a look at the picturesque snowy peaks of, among others, Langtang and Mahabharat Range. In addition, explore the region’s lush forest with various floras: Colorful rhododendron, Magnolia and Sal trees are covering the hills beautifully. Especially nature lovers and bird watchers can spend days exploring the exceptional species of wildlife. Balthali Village:

Just beyond Panauti town and Kopasi (40 KM southeast from Kathmandu) lies Balthali, a destination rich in culture and unspoiled nature. Sitting upon a hilltop, a small village retreat with a bird’s eye view on green terrace fields serves as a peaceful place of relaxation. The dotted ochre painted houses and faint shades of Himalayan peaks completing view on the north horizon. This village offers a sunrise in the east, speculating Himalayan range of Manaslu, Langtang & Everest in the north, innumerable rice terraces in the west & huge bodied green forest of Mahabharat range in the South. The area of Balthali is home to a variety of floras, colorful rhododendron forest, Magnolia & Sal trees.

Balthali Village Trekking Itinerary

After breakfast, we drive about 20 km east of Kathmandu to Changu Narayan (1500m), the oldest temple of the Kathmandu Valley and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 323 AD, this temple is a living museum of Nepalese art and history. From here, we begin our trek towards Nagarkot (2175m). The trail passes through pine forests and traditional villages, with panoramic Himalayan views stretching from Annapurna to Everest. Nagarkot is renowned for its breathtaking sunset and sunrise over the snowcapped peaks. Overnight in a comfortable hotel at Nagarkot.

Early morning, enjoy Nagarkot’s world-famous sunrise view over the Himalayas. After breakfast, we start our trek downhill through pine forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages. This scenic walk offers close interaction with local people and their daily life. After 5–6 hours, we reach Dhulikhel (1440m), an ancient Newar town with rich culture, old temples, and panoramic Himalayan views including Dorje Lakpa 6966m, Gauri Shankar 7145m, and Langtang Lirung 7324m. The medieval charm of Dhulikhel combined with its Himalayan vistas makes it a cultural and natural highlight. Overnight in hotel.

After breakfast, we trek to the sacred Buddhist site of Namo Buddha (1982m). This is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Nepal, where Lord Buddha is believed to have offered his life to a starving tigress and her cubs. We explore the ancient monastery and stupa before continuing our walk to Balthali Village (1730m), a quiet countryside settlement surrounded by lush hills, terraced fields, and traditional farms. Overnight at Balthali Village Resort, a peaceful retreat with warm hospitality and organic cuisine.

Today is dedicated to exploring the rural charm of Balthali. We hike to Dada Gaun, a traditional Tamang village where Buddhist communities live in harmony with nature. The trail leads us to Pada Gaun (2100m), offering spectacular views of the Himalayas and Mahabharat hills. We then follow the banks of the Ladku River back to the resort. This day provides an authentic insight into Nepal’s rural lifestyle along with peaceful Himalayan scenery. Overnight in Balthali.

After breakfast, we trek to the historic Newar town of Panauti (1400m). Panauti is beautifully located at the confluence of the Punyamata and Roshi streams and is believed to be protected from floods by serpent deities. The town is famous for its Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, dating back to 1294 AD, and its timeless Newar architecture. After exploring Panauti’s old streets and temples, we drive back to Kathmandu.
