Ganden is situated only 45 km east of Lhasa and is considered as one of the most beautiful sites. It has its own Monastery and is seen as one of the Three Pillars of Buddhism. We commence our trek to Samye (the oldest monastery in Tibet) from here and will have a excellent view on the small villages and mountains as we pass through the many valleys and along the rivers.

Ganden is situated 45 km East of Lhasa on the Highway that follows the south bank of Kyi Chu to Medro Gongkar. This is one of the most beautiful sites in central Tibet, which is considered as an abode of Champa, the future Buddha. The monastery perched on the ridge called Gokpo Ri, the site was chosen by Tsong Lhapa (1357-1419) for his first meditation where the monastery built later. This is one of the great monasteries out of six, built by Gelukpa sect. This itinerary linking two of the most important monasteries in Central Tibet crosses the Yatro Drak range of mountains that divide the Tsangpo basin from the Lhasa Valley. The trek provides a superb means of access to Tibet’s first monastery an institution founded in the 8th Century.

Ganden to Samye Trek Itinerary

In the morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your scenic 1 hour and 10 minute flight to Lhasa. Upon arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, a Nature Trail Trekking representative will assist you with arrival formalities and transfer you to your hotel in Lhasa. The 93km drive takes around two hours and offers breathtaking views of Tibetan landscapes, providing your first introduction to life on the Tibetan Plateau. Due to the sudden altitude gain from Kathmandu to Lhasa, you may experience mild altitude symptoms. The evening is reserved for rest, program briefing, and optional short walks around your hotel.

Today is dedicated to gentle exploration of Lhasa to allow proper acclimatization. You will visit the sacred Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, where pilgrims gather daily in devotion. The day also includes exploration of Barkhor Street, offering insight into local Tibetan life, culture, and traditional markets. The relaxed pace helps your body adapt to the altitude while immersing you in the city’s spiritual atmosphere.

A scenic drive takes you to Ganden Monastery, the seat of the Gelukpa order founded in 1417.
